Taiwan Strait

The dispute dates from 7 December 1949, when the Republic of China government relocated to Taipei at the end of the civil war. No sustained armed conflict has taken place across the strait since the shelling of Kinmen in 1958. Beijing claims the island and has not renounced the use of force; Taipei governs it, holds its own elections and maintains its own armed forces. The current phase of near-daily military activity — median-line crossings, air-defence-zone entries and large encirclement exercises — dates from August 2022. This page frames a standoff: an empty conflict feed here is the normal state, not a gap in reporting.

Two different counts. “Still displaced” is the stock IDMC records at year end; “newly displaced” is the flow during that year. The flow can exceed the stock when people return within the year, which is what Russia’s figures show.
