Fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces broke out in Khartoum on 15 April 2023, after the two had jointly removed the civilian transitional government in 2021. The war spread to Darfur, Kordofan and Gezira. The United Nations describes the resulting displacement as the largest in the world, with movement both inside Sudan and across the borders into Chad, South Sudan and Egypt. Famine conditions have been confirmed by the IPC in parts of Darfur.

Two different counts. “Still displaced” is the stock IDMC records at year end; “newly displaced” is the flow during that year. The flow can exceed the stock when people return within the year, which is what Russia’s figures show.
