Red Sea and Yemen

Houthi forces seized the vehicle carrier Galaxy Leader on 19 November 2023 and began attacking merchant shipping in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, framing the campaign as a response to the war in Gaza. Traffic through Bab el-Mandeb and the Suez Canal fell sharply as operators rerouted around the Cape of Good Hope. The attacks sit on top of Yemen's own war, which began in 2014 and has left the country divided between the Houthi authorities in Sanaa and the internationally recognised government.
