Myanmar
The civil war that followed the coup of 1 February 2021
Framing
as of 2026-09-07 · sources belowThe military seized power on 1 February 2021, annulling the 2020 election. Protest turned into armed resistance, and newly formed People's Defence Forces fought alongside ethnic armed organisations that had been in conflict with the state for decades. By 2024 the resistance held territory in Rakhine, Shan, Kachin, Karen and Chin. Fighting has driven displacement inside the country and across the Thai border, and the 2025 Sagaing earthquake struck areas already under conflict.
