The Korean War was halted by an armistice signed on 27 July 1953. No peace treaty followed, so the two states remain formally at war along a demilitarised zone four kilometres wide. Incidents have been episodic rather than sustained: the sinking of the Cheonan and the shelling of Yeonpyeong in 2010, artillery exchanges near the maritime boundary, and repeated missile tests. North Korea withdrew from the inter-Korean military agreement in 2023. This page frames a standoff: incidents are episodic, and an empty feed here is the ordinary state.

Displacement

Two different counts. “Still displaced” is the stock IDMC records at year end; “newly displaced” is the flow during that year. The flow can exceed the stock when people return within the year, which is what Russia’s figures show.
