President Jovenel Moïse was assassinated on 7 July 2021, and no election has been held since. Armed coalitions took control of most of Port-au-Prince, closing the airport and the main port for periods in 2024. A Kenyan-led Multinational Security Support mission, authorised by the UN Security Council in October 2023, deployed from mid-2024. The UN reports mass displacement inside the country and famine-level food insecurity in parts of the capital.

Two different counts. “Still displaced” is the stock IDMC records at year end; “newly displaced” is the flow during that year. The flow can exceed the stock when people return within the year, which is what Russia’s figures show.
